Top free mockup generators 2026 — honest watermark + limit comparison

Most "free mockup generator" tools have a catch somewhere: a format, a quota, a licence, a signup, or a watermark. This is a ranking by what you actually get free without paying that you can put on a listing, checked on each tool's own site on October 18, 2026.

Disclosure: Hauld (one entry below) is ours. We've rated it honestly against what we could verify on the others.

1. Canva Mockups (formerly Smartmockups) — 2,500 free mockups

Free tier: up to 2,500 mockups on a free Canva account; the free mockups download without a watermark, and Canva says its mockup images are royalty-free for personal and commercial projects
Catch: an account is required; the Pro templates, and anything past 2,500 mockups, need Canva Pro; a Canva Pro trial can add watermarks
Best free use: listing mockups for any product Canva has a template for, whoever prints it

smartmockups.com now opens Canva Mockups, so this is also where Smartmockups' free tier went. Source: canva.com/mockups, read October 18, 2026.

2. Printify Mockup Generator — unlimited, for Printify products

Free tier: unlimited, watermark-free mockups with a Printify account, for the 2,000+ products in its catalog
Catch: locked to Printify's catalog; AI-generated scenes need Printify Premium, 10 tries every 24 hours on select products
Best free use: if you print with Printify, use it for your catalog shots

3. Printful Mockup Generator — free if you have a Printful account

Free tier: free inside a Printful account, with unlimited high-resolution downloads you may use on any store, social channel, ad or email
Catch: only for the products in Printful's catalog
Best free use: if you actually use Printful for fulfillment, no reason not to use their generator for at least the basic shots

4. Mockey — 1,000+ free mockups, for personal use

Free tier: 1,000+ free mockups, JPG downloads, 3 a day
Catch: the free plan is for personal use only; commercial use, PNG files and unlimited downloads start with its Starter plan at $9.90 a month or $68 a year, and the templates are the same for every user
Best free use: trying mockup styles for your shop before paying for anything

Mockey's free plan is fine for a private test, but a mockup that goes on a listing needs a paid plan. Source: mockey.ai/pricing, read October 18, 2026.

5. Hauld — free preview, then 10 free photos a month

Free tier: a watermarked preview with no signup, then 10 photos a month (2 batches of 5) on a free account, no card required
Catch: free photos are 1024px with a small "Made with Hauld" mark in the corner. Clean 2048px files start with the $9 pack.
Best free use: testing whether the AI render works for YOUR specific design before buying
Disclosure: we built this

The preview needs no signup, but it is watermarked and limited to 3 a day. The free account adds 10 photos a month; for clean files you're at $9 for the pack (30 photos).

What "free" actually means: a reality check

Free mockup tools are real, but each one draws a line somewhere:

Formats and quotas (Mockey: JPG only and 3 a day on the free plan; Canva: 2,500 mockups; Hauld: 10 photos a month on the free plan)
Licences (Mockey's free plan: personal use only)
Watermarks (Hauld's free preview and free plan, a Canva Pro trial)
An account in their ecosystem (Printful, Printify, Canva)
Templates shared with every other user (all the template tools)

Free tools cover a lot of watermark-free mockups. What none of them gives you is a scene nobody else has. The cheapest ways to get that, or more formats:

Hauld $9 pack — one-time, 30 photos, no mark, no recurring
Mockey Starter — $9.90 a month or $68 a year, commercial use and PNG downloads
Printful/Printify built-in — free if you fulfill through them

Pick the line you can live with.
