The real trade-off: a subscription template library vs. AI renders of your design

Placeit is a huge, well-built template library. You pick a mockup, drop your design onto a smart-object layer, and download. It's fast, it's proven, and it covers product types Hauld doesn't touch. The catch is baked into the model: the photo you download is a stock template, and every other Placeit subscriber can download the exact same one. Any of them can put that same wooden desk, in that same light, behind their own mug.

Hauld works the other way. Instead of pasting your artwork onto an existing photo, it renders the whole scene from scratch with Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash Image model, rendering seven scenes per haul, scoring them, and keeping the best five. The prompt asks the model to keep your design as uploaded on the product surface, while the room, the light, the props, and the framing are generated fresh for your batch.

Stated plainly: Placeit gives you a bigger catalog, video, and a template you assemble in seconds. Hauld gives you photos no one else has, an editorial look instead of centered-on-white, and a free plan of 10 photos a month before you pay anything. Neither is strictly "better" — they're built on different assumptions about what a listing photo should be.

Switching from Placeit: the workflow and the cost math

The move is simpler than it sounds because there's nothing to migrate. You keep your designs; you just change where the photos come from. Export your artwork as a PNG, JPG, or SVG (a transparent PNG works best), upload it to Hauld, pick one of Hauld's supported product types — or Mix mode to render five different products in one batch — and you get five photos at 2048px in about sixty seconds. If one shot isn't right, regenerate that single photo for free, up to five times per haul. Then download and drop them straight into your Etsy, Shopify, TikTok Shop, or Depop listings the same way you would with anything else.

The cost side is where the two diverge most. Placeit is a subscription: $14.95 a month or $89.69 a year on its pricing page (read October 18, 2026), renewed every period until you cancel, with a one-month minimum once you have downloaded a template. You keep what you already downloaded, but new mockups need an active plan. Hauld starts with a free plan: 10 photos a month, at 1024px with a small mark. Paid plans are a $9 pack of 30 photos whose credits never expire, Creator at $12 a month for 150 photos, and Shop at $29 a month for 600.

Per photo, that comes to about $0.30 on the pack, $0.08 on Creator and $0.05 on Shop. Creator costs less a month than Placeit's $14.95 monthly plan. Placeit's yearly plan, $89.69, comes out lower than twelve months of Creator ($144); what differs is the photo itself, a scene rendered for your design instead of a template other shops download too. For a seller who refreshes listings in bursts, such as a seasonal drop or a few new SKUs a month, the free plan or a $9 pack can cover it without a recurring charge. When Placeit is the better choice

Being fair means saying this plainly: for some sellers, Placeit is the right tool, and switching would be a downgrade.

• You make 100 or more mockups a month, every month. On the yearly plan that is about $0.07 a mockup ($7.47 a month for 100), which a Hauld pack or Creator plan does not beat.
• You need a big shelf. Placeit's FAQ counts 29,000+ assets across mockups, designs, logos and videos. If you sell product types outside Hauld's 11, or need logos and design templates too, its library covers cases Hauld doesn't.
• You want video. Video templates come with the Unlimited plan, as MP4 files. Hauld makes photos only, so keep Placeit for video.
• You print with Printful. Printful's mockup generator page says Printful merchants get 15% off any Placeit subscription (read October 18, 2026).

And if you genuinely prefer the clean, centered, catalog-style template look, that's a legitimate choice, not a mistake. Hauld makes the most sense when you want unique, editorial photos and a free plan to start from, not when you need the widest possible template shelf. Pick the one that matches how you actually sell.
